Born on November 15, 1931 in Gatuyaini, Kenya, Mwai Kibaki is the current President of Kenya. He has been in office since December 30, 2002. He previously served as the Vice-President of Kenya from 1978-1988. In addition was has the Minister for Finance from 1969-1981, the Minister of Home Affairs from 1982-1988, and the Minister for Health from 1988-1991. Kibaki chose to tackle the struggle for childhood education. In 2002, he made all primary education free. Many children weren’t able to attend school because of the costly fees. It was said that often school fees were 1/3 of the parent’s entire salary. The free education became a necessary provision for the incline of children attending class. Kibaki made important strides in making education available.
